I first got into triathlon in my late thirties, years after watching my brother compete in a triathlon and thinking “I would love to be fit enough to be able to do something like that”. When we moved to Wigan, I found Invictus and that was the beginning of the adventure! I’ve since done races of all distances from super sprint to Ironman and have a great community of friends and training buddies in the club.
I decided that I wanted to put something back into this club that has helped me so much, so I joined the coaching team; I am now a BTF Level 2 qualified coach, and I love working with both our junior and adult members, helping them achieve their goals and have fun in our sport. As a coach, I particularly enjoy seeing people really surprise themselves, achieving things through consistent training that they wouldn’t have previously thought possible.

Head Coach
David Chesney
I joined Invictus Triathlon Club and started racing Triathlon in 2016, which was a return to sport having previously played football and rugby, and the intention initially was to regain his fitness after a long lay off, got the triathlon bug and have since gone on to race over all distances in the UK and Europe, completing Ironman UK in 2018, 2019 and Barcelona 2024.
I qualified as a Level 1 British Triathlon Coach in 2018 followed by BTF Level 2 qualification in 2020, followed by L2 Strength and Conditioning qualification.
I really enjoy coaching our athletes, both Junior and adult, develop to help them achieve their racing goals, seeing them train and see them enjoy the sport, at all levels.

Hilary Whitecunas
Hilary was initially introduced to the world of triathlon when her son completed his first event back in 2015. She joined Invictus in 2016, in a bid to regain her fitness. Having previously only ran in 5k events, she has since completed sprint tri's, sportives, 10k's and also a half marathon.
Hilary became junior coordinator for the club in 2017 and with the progression of the junior section, went on to qualifiy as a BTF activator in 2020 to assist the junior coaching team.

Kayleigh Parrett
I've been doing triathlon ever since I realised that running every day kept causing me to develop injuries, and swimming and cycling helped to burn off my perpetual need to keep moving! I've completed multiple triathlons from sprints all the way up to Ironman Leeds. My Strava bio however, still says I am a runner attempting triathlon! My true love is ultra running, particularly in the hills of the lake district.

I joined the club in 2023 and after a few months joined the coaching team, first as a foundation coach before progressing. I am now a BTF group coach, with a special interest in adults run coaching. I find it particularly rewarding when athletes notice tangible improvements in techniques during coaching sessions. I also love talking about running shoes, so it's best not to get me started on that!!

BTF Level 2 Coach
Martin Burrows
Martin joined invictus in 2017 after watching his wife, Yvonne, complete her first triathlon. Blown away by the support from other team mates and supporters he decided to join the club. After many years of inactivity, Martin found the support in sessions was really encouraging and supportive. Since then he has competed in many triathlons at various distances. Martin has completed both the level 1 and 2 British triathlon coaching courses, and actively coaches both adult and junior sessions.

Olivia Sumner
I first started Invictus Triathlon Club as a junior member in 2020. I had always been passionate about swimming and thought triathlons might be something fun to do. While I was a part of the junior team, I got asked whether I would like to do my junior activator course as this would allow me to help with the younger members. I have since progressed further by joining the adult team and doing my BTF foundation and group coaching course. These courses have allowed me to improve my coaching by allowing me to coach both the adult and junior teams. I have loved having the opportunity to help athletes within our club better themselves and I look forward to carrying on helping them make the improvements they want to. I particularly enjoy coaching the junior team and watching how the juniors are improving week by week. I personally love coaching the swimming side of triathlons as I have also got my level 2 STA swim teaching qualification which allows me to bring in some of the knowledge and training I have from that. I have competed in many sprint triathlons while being with the club and have been able to place in a few of these, with the help and support I have received from everyone at Invictus.

BTF Group Coach
Will Parrett
I first joined Invictus Triathlon Club in 2023 after completing a few sprint triathlons. My main goal was to become a stronger swimmer, and through the club I not only achieved that but also went on to complete events ranging from Olympic distance up to Ironman, as well as the Lap ultra marathon. Within six months, my triathlon skills improved significantly, and I decided I wanted to give back to the club that helped me so much.

In 2024, I completed my Foundation Coaching Course, and in 2025 I qualified as a Group Coach.

Since then, I’ve become actively involved in coaching across a variety of disciplines, with a particular passion for adult swim coaching. I love the technical side of swimming — how small adjustments can make a big difference in efficiency and speed — and I enjoy helping athletes unlock that potential.

BTF Level 1 Coach
Yvonne Burrows
Yvonne joined Invictus in 2016, as she wanted to be able to swim more than two lengths without stopping! On joining, she was invited to the running sessions and was soon hooked on having a go at a triathlon. Since joining, she has competed in a variety of competitions from 5k to half marathon and sprint to a half ironman distance triathlon. She enjoys all aspects of the club, from training, to the support given by both coaches and members.
In March 2020 Yvonne completed the children's activator course and really enjoys being a part of the junior team.
Yvonne subsequently completed BTF Level 2 qualification and is an active member of our coaching team. Yvonne initially was part of the Junior coaching team, helping to grow the Junior section, and also coaches adult sessions.
