Bike Box Bookings

COLT have five bike boxes and 3 bikes that may be borrowed by members free of charge. The bike boxes can be borrowed by any member in order to take their bike abroad to race or train. Boxes are booked according availability on a first come, first served basis.

COLT bikes are intended to be made available to new members wanting to try a road bike before making the commitment to purchasing. At the end of each loan each bike is checked by a professional bike mechanic and serviced before being loaned out again. Bikes are not loaned for a fixed period, but the loanee will be expected to return the bike if a new member wishes to try one.

Terms and conditions of borrowing a COLT bike box or COLT bike

  1. Read these notes carefully. COLT will not take any responsibility for a member booking a bike box that is not suitable for their bike;
  2. Bike boxes and bikes are available to be borrowed by full members of COLT or COLT Juniors only;
  3. Bike boxes and bikes are borrowed at the risk of the borrower who will be liable for any damage to the box or replacement of the box in event of accident or theft etc;
  4. Bike boxes and bikes must be borrowed and returned on the stated dates by the borrower. The borrower agrees to pay bike box hire costs to any subsequent hirer in the event of the box not being returned on the agreed date.
  5. COLT is not liable for any damage or loss to equipment carried in the box, however caused;
  6. COLT is not liable for any damage or injury caused while riding a COLT bike. It is recommended that members borrowing a COLT bike have at least 3rd party liability insurance through British Triathlon membership or other insurance scheme;
  7. One concurrent bike box or bike booking per member;
  8. 28 days maximum bike box booking per year, per member unless agreed by the COLT committee;
  9. COLT is not liable for any loss associated with a box not being available on the booked day due to damage or delayed return.

IMPORTANT: when selecting dates, DO NOT START YOUR BOOKING ON THE DAY OF YOUR FLIGHT! Give yourself at least 24 hours to pack you box and give yourself 24 hours to return the box. In other words, book your box from the day before you fly to the day after your return.

IMPORTANT: COLT bike boxes require you to remove your handlebars to pack your bike. Some modern bikes with integrated stem and bars do not allow for their easy removal. How to pack a COLT bike box: 4 Tips To Avoid Bike Box Heartache:

  1. Don’t pack your bike at the last minute. Unless you are an experienced traveller with bikes, make sure you know how to disassemble and reassemble you bike before you pack it. Watch the video and make sure you’ve got the right tools with you.
  2. QR skewers get bent in transit. Your wheels are secured in the box with QR skewers – these can easily get bashed and bent, so use cheap QR skewers to secure the wheels in the box and pack your expensive lightweight titanium skewers separately.
  3. Pedals easily get jammed on to cranks so if you want to avoid last minute bike pack panic, make sure you have an extended allen key (usually 8mm, but check your pedals) or pedal spanner with you to facilitate removal. Make sure pedal threads are greased before fitting them to your bike.
  4. Invest in a spare gear hanger (the small piece of metal that attaches your rear derailleur to your frame). This part is designed to bend or snap easily to protect your frame in a crash or other impact. It can easily get bent or broken in transit. A bent gear hanger usually results in an unrideable bike. Gear hangers are all different, there is no standard design so the chances of finding one that fits your frame are vanishingly small. Buy one from where you bought your bike from in advance.
